Background & History
MARDI at the early establishment 1971-1972.
MARDI was established with the main objectives of generating and promoting new, appropriate and efficient technologies towards the advancement of the food, agriculture, food and agro-based industries.
MARDI is managed and guided by the regulations and policies set by the MARDI Governing Board and consented by the Minister of Agriculture And Agro-Based Industry. In matters pertaining to finance the consensus of the Minister of Finance is also obligatory.
Whereas, the Scientific Council ensures that MARDI technical programs attain the highest quality and level of competence.
The MARDI leadership envisages had evolved from capacity building, establishment of farming and cropping systems towards technology commercialization, total quality management and culture of excellence in attaining national and international recognition
Key milestones achieved that are pivotal towards the development of MARDI include the following:
- Amendments to the MARDI Act in 1990, allowing MARDI to be involved in commercialization activities. This was subsequently ensued by the establishment of MARDITech Corporation Sdn. Bhd. In 1992. The Act was further amended in 2002 to allow for wider commercialization freedom
- The strive for quality management bear yielded MARDI's certification with MS ISO 9001:1994 in 1998. Another ISO quality cap was earned when MARDI's analytical laboratory was accredited with MS ISO/EC 17025 in 2001. This was subsequently followed by MARDI being MS ISO 9001:2000 certified in 2004
- Strengthening of technology delivery systems as part of the total innovation approach with the establishment of test-beds and incubators as components to the entrepreneurship development programme in 2005
- The embracing of K-management as an operational culture in 2005
- Organizational restructuring to position MARDI to the current needs. The most recent came into effect on 1 February 2002 to further strengthen technology transfer activities
- Establishment of additional research stations within the country, including in Sarawak and Sabah, based on agro-climatic zones. Outreach stations were also established in Mali and Malawi in Africa
- International recognition was achieved through collaborative networking with research organizations and universities from the USA, Canada, Japan, Australia, Taiwan, China, ASEAN and EU countries.
- Collaborative researches are also conducted with international research institutes such as the International Network for the Improvement of Bananas and Plantains (INIBAP); ACIAR; IRRI; IPGRI; CABI; Agriculture Biotechnology Center, Hungary; Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center (AVRDC); EU/ALTERRA Greenworld Research; International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA); and FAO of the United Nations. Technical consultations on agricultural development were offered to Kyrgyzstan, Bosnia, Syria, Qatar, Cambodia and Ivory Coast
- MARDI Corporation Sdn. Bhd. has also stretched MARDIs activities locally and internationally
